Can anyone tell me a bit about these two bottles? Age? Value? One is 8" tall with a 3" diameter and the other is 7.75" x3". Any thoughts on these would be greatly appreciated.
Stoneware ales or beers, very attractive, seen them sell for $5 and $40, all depends on if someone likes the colors and shape, very common actually....Thew one on the right looks less common shape and color wise to me...1870-95 ???...Jim
They were made in England. Some were also made in Scotland and other parts of the UK. Either way, they are from the United Kingdom. Anywhere from 1850 or so up to 1920 or so. The white bottom portions are usually called Bristol glaze. It was a high-quality glaze used in England a lot. That glaze is not usually seen in the U.S. until after about 1880. Another sure sign of them being from across the pond is the quality. They are well made, mass-produced, and one is like another. American bottles were salt-glazed for the most part and quality was harder to control. American bottles were individually hand-thrown up until around 1875, so each one is pretty much unique. My advice - Stay away from the American versions, they are addicting. Before you know it, you will have a house full of them! stonebottle
