Last Saturday afternoon I was walking through the woods squirrel hunting and saw the neck of a bottle sticking out of the ground . The shape of the neck and lip told me it was old , I couldn't believe my luck ! I was near a marsh and the ground was soft , so I gently coaxed it out of the ground . What came out was a plain amber , strap sided flask , 7-5/8" inches high , 3-3/4" wide at the shoulders , 3-1/4 wide at the base with a rounded applied lip with one ring under it . The base has a mould seam running diagonally across it with a circular depression , 1-5/16" in diameter (not a pontil) in the center of the base , with a very lightly embossed (very hard to see) "8" in it's center . The bottle is in excellent condition , no major scratches , no cracks , chips , or dings , and the color is a beautiful deep amber . I know these flasks are not rare , but I like it and I have a few other flasks in my collection . All in all , it was a good day , it was also a good day for the huge squirrel (it must have been on steroids) I saw about 20 minutes later , it eluded the #5 shot from my 20 Ga. [] (I should have taken the 12 Ga. with me instead) . I would guess the bottle was made sometime around 1880 , and if I saw it for sale , I would buy it because of its condition and color , but I don't think I would pay much more than $10 for it . This was the first time I've ever found an old bottle while I was hunting .
