Brick or cornerstone?..

While looking around my jobsite for any bottles I found this ...At first I thought it was a brick but it's carved and not a typical brick color or size...I found shards of the same type of dark glass around...and the XXX makes me wonder is this the cornerstone from a Bar or Brewer from long ago?...there were buildings on the site dating way back in the 1800's...I searched but couldn't find info for J.G.R Co JERSEY CITY NJ

I think so too..but the Bar thing sounded great!.....I still would like to find out how old it is

Could have been the brick co advertising but I,m leaning torwards the builder. some used bronze plaques to let people know who erected it. Just a thought... DD

It is probably a fire brick. I would gather that the "R" is for refractory. Furnace and fireplace bricks are a different size than house or street paving bricks. Cool piece of history and advertising. I am also guessing that the XXX is the heat resistance of the brick. A quick check of TOC Jersey City directories may lead to the J C of the company. Scott

Heard back from a brick collector, it's actually J.C.R. Co. for Jersey City Refractory Co.. They were in business from 1925-1935 and they are also found with No. 1 on them as well instead of XXX, hope this helps...
