Hi all,

I picked this up this weekend - Honestly I didn't recognize it as a fire bomb until someone else suggested it.

It was painted red, but this has worn off, as has the spot where the name was painted on (I can see some vague symbols that resemble letters, but nothing legible).

It has a neat and somewhat unnerving spring trigger. However, after doing some reading, it seems this trigger is designed to snap only if it melts? Is this a correct assessment?

Does anyone know what type of fire bomb this is, date, and the contents? Is this a saline solution or carbon tet?

Thanks everyone!

Side view.

It was mounted on the wall when I found it.

Yes the link holding the hammer in place would melt at a certain temperature before it would spring shut and bust the glass holding the contents, that being said I would personally put some sort of padding there just in case....Jim

This is common in older fire sprinkler heads found in buildings, most of todays heads have a liquid that boils and breaks the glass seal...Jim

This section right here has a low temp solder that would melt away and then the spring would pop....

Thats an interesting enlongated form. Most were spherical.
The trigger link may be a low melting bismuth alloy.
It is a late design , maybe 1920s-1930s. I dont recognize the model.
I would expect it to contain carbon tet. I agree with Jim about padding the trigger part. It would make a smelly mess if it went off by accident.

These were apparently used in hotels and other commercial buildings.

[align=left]Thanks all! I'll secure it with some heavy duty wire. It looks like a pretty powerful spring.

I like how the design allows for easy grabbing and throwing, with only a small part of the glass embedded in the metal.

Too bad the label has faded!

I do not think it was meant to taken out and thrown, I think it was meant to be mounted on a wall and stationary....I could be 100% wrong though...Jim

Now that I look at others it looks like it could be both stationary and thrown...

It looks like a dual purpose since the ring it is mounted in has an opening and the metal is not that strong. It definitely was meant to be mounted, but maybe throwing it at the fire was a good backup? The glass is not loose within the mount, but it is easily movable. I could be 100% wrong too though!
