These might not be nice as that Sparks that just came on but I dug one in Chelsea and one in Brooklyn.Opium pipes are much harder to come by than ordinary smoking pipes. If I've put these on before or they bore you please pay them no attention but I thought they were pretty cool,Kev

What cool pipes to have in your collection. How can you tell an opium pipe from a regular one? Is it the length of the stem? Really cool. How old are they?

I really am glad you like them, they mean alot to me as I dug them personally. They are roughly from the 1835- 1855 period as these are the dates that the houses were built. You can distinguish opium pipes from normal tobacco pipes in that they are much smaller, especially the bowls. They also tend to have some rather freakish faces on them widely believed to connote the exhileration (and or anguish) associated with taking opium. In fact the yellow, curved example has a face on both sides, one very mild and placid and the other clearly in anguish. Thanks for the interest,Kev

Well since we are on the subject I thought I would join in and say hello. Been following the forum for a while and really enjoy all the great stories and overall comraderie. A Dr McMunns Elixer was my very first pontil dug back in the 70s and I've been partial to the crude little cylinders ever since. Those pipes are cool !
