Hot Texas Dig!

So on Sunday I decided to head out and try my hand at digging (I dig once every two weeks)...packed the water, the umbrella, the probe, the shovel, and the sunblock. Forecast was calling for ~95 degrees and about 90% humidity...and sunny. Got to location at 06:15 just as the sky was lightening. Probed out something promising...dug it out and found two clay marbles and nothing else whole. Probed out another hole...dug an old copper pan and some more broken stuff. Probed out another hole and dug down to find an old watering trough about 6' long and 1' wide. Plenty of glass in it but nothing whole. I started chasing a thin layer of trash out to one side of the trough and there it was...a squat from Galveston! My digging partner punched a hole right to the side of mine to keep chasing the trash layer and there it was...another squat from Galveston! Those finds gave us some energy to keep at it, but it was not to be. A two bottle day...not much for 9 hours of hot digging (plus 3 hour drive round trip) but I drove home happy! Not often that we find these late 1860's/early 1870's squats and one of them was a new one for me so that made it even better! Very excited to add this to my H. Cortes collection...I now have the blob, the gravitating stopper, and three variations of the hutch sodas from this bottler. Still have one variation of the blob, a couple variations of the Galveston hutch sodas, the Houston hutch, and the Brenham hutch to hunt down to make the set.[attachment=IMG_1757.JPG]

I was pretty excited...been 6 months or more since we dug anything whole from the 1870's. Always love to dig this early Texas history.

A couple of great finds. The local bottles are always what I look for. The font on the embossing there looks familiar. I know I've seen that font on another bottle or more.
