How to get started Digging??

New to this stuff - where do you start digging???? I'm in San Diego area. I'm sure the beaches have been stripped by metal detectors already.

I wish you the best of luck and hate to say this, but San Diego is probably one of the toughest places in the country to look for digs.. I spent a couple months with relatives who lived in the San Carlos neighborhood during the height of my digging career and came home with narry a bottle, except a couple I bought in Tijuana
