Hey J.P.
Welcome. Beautiful bottle you have there. It is an Hutchinson soda bottle. They are quite unusual in colored glass such as this amber example. Most are aqua (light blue or green) or clear (colorless glass). Many of the colored examples contained 'small' beers instead of soda (like lemon beer, birch beer, spruce beer, ginger beer, root beer, etc . . .). This type of bottle was used primarliy between the early 1880s until about world war one.
I have not heard of this bottler but I am not an expert on Chicago area bottlers. Chicago was a huge town even back then and many many different bottlers are known. (The most common Chicago examples of colored hutches are from Lomax, though.) If this bottle is rare, it will be highly collectible and it could easily be worth hundreds.
One big caveat. I cannot tell from your picture alone if it is a reprpoduction. It doesn't look like it but there are many known examples commisioned by collector's clubs or made as commemorative bottles. If this is one of them, the value would be more like $5 - 10 - 15 maybe.
Thank you for the info. How do I tell if it is a reproduction? It does have a C&Co. 3 on the bottle as well. The 3 leans a little to the right. Here is a picture of the bottom, if that helps.
It sure looks authentic (although I cannot make out the manufacturing marks if you were trying to show them). I'd be interested in hearing the rarity still but the condition looks great. My guess is that you have a pretty good bottle and serious collectors will want it.
As a side note. I have found hundred of hutchinson sodas and I have yet to actually find an amber one!
Thanks again for the info. I am not a collector so I am interested in selling it. Is Ebay the best way to sell bottles, or are there sites specifically for selling bottles? Is anyone on this site interested in it? I can post more pictures if needed.
I might know somebody who would want it. I'll call him tomorrow and ask him. Ebay works fine and it should sell on there if you list it properly. One little thing that might scare some bidders is that if you are totally new, they might not trust you to simply take the money and run. If you have built up feedback for years, that concern is mitigated. I'll check back in and let you know what my friend thinks tomorrow.
Hey JP,
Just a confirmation that my buddy Jim (Mrjimk) is indeed the person I wanted to contact about this. Jim is one the the nicest guys you could ever want to meet, so, don't hesitate to call him if you do decide to part with it.
