The other day I was lucky to pick up a neat old iron pontil bottle at a new shop I visited. In the back of some bottles I found this greenish blue iron pontil with Cosgrove & Kernan from Charleston SC on it. I has a blob top. Looks like a soda. I did some research on it, a man name James Cosgrove move it to Charleston in the mid 1800, made and sold mineral water, Ale, Larger beer, soda and cigars for the Civil War toop as the war went down in Charleston. The bottle dates from 1845 - 1855. As I inspected the bottle it seem to be shorter than most but the blob top look real. Now I have been told it may be a repaired top on it. But it looks professtional. Has any one ever had this one or know bottle repairs?

On the left side of the neck [facing the screen] it looks like it has a brownish discoloration at the neck.Looks like the epoxy used is old and turned brown ,a sure sign of a repair and a good while ago. Is that a hair line crack in the middle of the bottle?SORRY YOU ASKED FOR EXPERTS. WHATEVER, A GREAT BOTTLE!

No, there is no cracks. Just old marks in the glass. Expoy, is that like some kind of hard glue.

Also, if you stick your finger inside the neck and feel around, if it was repaird you should feel a slight roughness or lip.

If it is repaired it was put back together at the base of the blob. You should be able to see it with a loop or magnifier of some kind. Epoxi is a two part cement and if it was done before about 1990 or a cheap epoxi was used it will yellow over time.
