Went to my home town this weekend to attend a banquet and see some friends. Its a little town in the country and my uncle who still lives up there has a real old house on the side of a steep hill. I figured I would give it quick look over...since getting the bottle bug in Feb. I have learned a few things and had an idea of where to look. I didnt find much but a real nice hutch type soda bottle and my first older flask. Add in an old baking soda bottle and couple of small cement/liquid porcelean bottles and it was time well spent.

Since starting my collecting in Feb. I have not hit the jackpot anywhere but a few nice ones here and there really statrt to add up! Fun thing to do...love the hunt!!

Nice finds, Chris,

I believe that Weller is a Gravitating Stopper, rather than a Hutch. Extra points for those!

Thanks for the info and help...i just figured it out as well. So that is not a hutch...would that be the design before or after most "hutch" type bottles?? I am sure that flask is nothing special but the "Union Made" on it was interesting.

Chris,

It's pre-Hutch. Does your base have "Matthews Patent" language?

gravitatingpatent.jpg
"Gravitating Stopper ("Matthew's Patent")
The gravitating stopper was patented on October 11, 1864 by Albert Albertson and assigned to John Matthews, an associate of Albertson's, in 1866. This closure was apparently first put into use in 1867 or 1868 (Riley 1958). It consists of an elongated glass plug with a flared knob on one end. A rubber gasket was placed on the upper end of the knob which when placed in the bottle sealed the contents by pressing against the inside surface of the bottle at the juncture of the neck and shoulder. The bottle was "...filled in an upright position, then inverted so the stopper would gravitate into closed position, and be held there by the inside pressure when the bottle was removed (from the filling machine)." The Matthew's Patent noted that the stopper could be made of "...glass, hardwood, or other suitable material..." though it is likely that glass was by far the most commonly used material (Bender 1986)..." From.
