I think you have a real winner there. I have been looking around and have seen examples exactly like yours (but with metal caps) that have sold in the past for between $200.00 and $800.00. However, I believe the $800.00 one was "etched" glass and not applied paint. Most of them dated around 1910.

Thanks SPBOB, I hope it's a winner. I am still looking on narrowing down a price range and date range for this. Also would this be considered ACL? From what I have been reading that wouldn't have been till the 1930's. If it's not ACL what would it be considered? Sorry for all the questions, just want to do the right thing with this bottle.

Good question. I admit that is one area of applied finishes I have never researched. Terms like acid etched and stenciled come to mind, but my instinct tells me it is more of a baked on enamel, which was used on early barber bottles - bar bottles, decanters and similar other speciality bottles. If I were to research it I would start with "baked on enamel labels" and see what comes up. I know there is a specific term/word for it, but it escapes me at the moment. I have to believe someone who is much more familiar with it than I am will come along shortly and tell "us" all about it.

Your bottle dates from c1910, you're not going to get top dollar for it because the metal top is missing. they look something like a shot glass. If you can get hold of a PETRETTI'S COCA COLA price guide your bottle is in it under syrup bottles.

I did some additional research and it appears I may have guessed right on your bottle having an enameled label. The picture and text below are examples of enameled bottles from the 1800s. The only thing I wasn't able to narrow down was whether these particular types of labels were fired baked in a kiln or air dried. I found references that said it was done both ways. I also discovered that most types of enamel have a metalic base and came in both a powder as well as a liquid, and were typically applied by way of a stencil.

You might be able to find an original measuring cap for it if you look around a bit. If I come across one I will let you know.

Bar Bottles or Decanters: Antique bottles in fancy shapes, or featuring facets of cut glass and with colored enamel or gold wording are one type of bottle we seek. An enameled example may feature a color image such as clasped hands (Union Rye), a rooster (Chicken Cock Bourbon), a horseman (Pedigree or Old Rosebud), a cannon (Old Continental), or an Inspector holding a bottle (Sunny Brook).

Thanks SPBOB,
I talked with my landlord and he never had the measuring cap. It may be in this building somewhere but it's a big place and would probaly take years to find.

That is some good info there! I am going to list the bottle this weekend and will post when I do. I AM NOT putting this on ebay because the fees would kill me. I will probaly list it on Bonanza.com since I also sell there (same username as here). If anyone is interested before I put it there they can make me offers and I will entertain them.

What price would you suggest I start this at? In other words, if this were yours, what would you do. Bonanza is a fixed price site with a best offer option similar to ebay's BIN with best offer. So I need to figure a min and a max. I have an idea for the lowest I would be willing to take but not sure.
Thanks for all the help so far and in the future!

There is an old saying in retail sales (which I was involved with for about twenty years) that goes ...

"You can always negotiate the price down - but you can rarely if ever negotiate it up"

So if the bottle were mine I would shoot for the moon and set the Buy-It-Now price at about $750.00.

Rarely does anyone pay the asking price anyway, so it is almost a misnomer (pie in the sky). It will be the offers that really tell you how much interest there is in it, and how much someone is willing to pay.

Please let us know if you post it on that Bonanza site. I for one would be interested in seeing it and watching what happens. Of course you may also receive some offers here via PMs.

Good luck. I hope you get a jillion dollars for it.

Here's a couple of types of the enameled fountain backbar bottles. These are various Celery Soda brands and date 1890's to 1915. I've since found measuring caps for the ones missing. I do see the caps at shows from time to time.

Here's some more "pie in the sky" for you. The Coca Cola fountain syrup bottle shown below sold at auction (non-e-bay) on April 7, 2007 for a whopping ...

$850.00

I'm not sure if the gold tone is actual or just a poor color representation. Of course it also has a cap that yours doesn't. But all things considered, those types of bottles seem valuable and in demand. At least the one below was back in 2007. Time will tell if/when you list it.
