well the concrete is about 6 feet and im down about a foot passed. we probed andit goes at least another five feet. the water dosnt smell bad. best thing i found was in the first two feet of the dig and it was a piece of a bottle from the 1870s. but all im finding is newer stuff. this is my first time digging so please dont thinkim an idiot, just dont know to much yet. when i say newer i mean like a little bo peep amonia bottle and god knows how many ketchup bottles. but the ketchup bottles are gettin a bit older cause these ones dont have threads on them any more. also could anybody give me and idea of when they used shells?

if this all sound familiar its because this is the privy im digging in bay city. clearly he does not know im a member.

oh boy!!! cobalt quart beers! got close today. acl chapmans quart soda from saginaw broken, of course, but from the 20's so we are getting older. also a kerr quart jar. much older than the 40's we started with.

little story for everyone.
started off finding toys like metal or cast fire trucks and little toy soldiers and cap guns. figure kids between 10-12 maybe a little older would play with

a couple foot lower we found a little glass piggy bank and ABC blocks

couple foot lower we found glass baby bottles

its a cool progression you can see and its a really cool way see the age changing and the bottles and other items show the same age. anything pre 1920 in bay city and saginaw is all gravy if we can find local stuff. even in the mid to late teens in bay city and saginaw you find hutchinson sodas and blob beers so we are in good shape. we wont find pontiled items but the stuff i collect is not pontiled so im good!

Exactly the way I see it! I try to ignore it, but it gets really annoying when people shove down your throat that "older is better", and that digging newer privies is "amateur". If you like pontiled bottles and older stuff, good for you, but don't act like I'm a lesser digger because I prefer digging through newer stuff!

showing the nice setup josh built around the hole. it has a small pulley, a frame, and a cover to keep the kids out. the pictures show only the 6 foot mark at that point. we worked on it for a little over an hour i think then my fiance got into an accident so i had to leave without taking any more pictures. we have at least 5 foot to go.

their is not a single bottle from bay city or saginaw known to be pontiled. i collect things from those 2 cities period. you can call that amateur but my preference is bottles from the 1870's to 1900. if i find a pontiled pit, which i have, everything gets sold off because it has not collecting value to me. in my mind if you fill in a pit because its "too new" you will be throwing away the possibility of a late throw or some nice ACL bottles or decent hutches and jars.

every veteran here has dug a late throw. im sure of that. many hutches and other blown bottles were made well into the 1900's. we even have a stoneware bottle in bay city, M.T. pop works, which is made in like 1910. the company wasnt around till after 1900 and they had quart hutches, quart stonewares, and pint hutches. keep that in mind.
