I bought this little spitton (6cm high and 8cm diameter) from an antique dealer for 6€.
He said me it was Elizabethan. I´m not convinced.
Please help me.

Could that be a blown glass spitoon?

Did he offer any qualification as to why he thought it a spitoon. Given the romp and chivalry of that era I would think spitoons would be better made of brass. Just my thoughts. It looks more like a vase. I am know expert on Elizabethan. I am just interested in it.

It does look sort of like a spittoon but I think it would be a bit odd and kind of gross to have a spittoon made of transparent glass. I would guess its more likely a vase or art glass.

Wow that was a fast post. You beat me by a minute, with the answer.

One had better been a pretty good shot with a spitoon that tiny.
Maybe it was used in the "House of Spitters".[8|]

RE: Spittoon

I am still skeptical. Just because people call something a spittoon doesnt mean it was really used as such. We saw that with the "naval boarding weapons".
Its possible but i'd like to see some evidence such as an old ad or one shown in a legitimate book on glass.

Also, from what I've read the Elizabathan era was 1558–1603. If a dealer knew an item was that old they wouldnt be selling it for that price. And that doesnt seem like a typical glass color from that age, it looks more 19th-20th century. Victorian maybe.

RE: Spittoon

It is probably a vase. I used to collect cuspidors (spitoons) and I don't belive that is one. Cuspidors were usualy made of metal but some were glass or ceramic. The glass and cerimac ones would have been very ornate and just for show. That one is kind of plane and it looks top heavy which would be the last thing you wanted.
