Lucky to find intact for sure . Hard to believe it made it in the ground like that .
It may have been in wicker when it was tossed away many years ago , and that probably helped protect it until the trash and dirt settled in around it and then the wicker rotted away over the years .

Wow thank you all for some really excellent posts and ideas! I filled it to 2.3 litres (0.6 gallons) and the water level comes to about halfway up the neck - I am not sure how much they would fill these things? At half gallon it came to the top of the shoulder a little above the horizontal mold line.

Mike your assessments are wise and your knowledge is vast! I have been wondering Stoddard made myself, it truly is an oddball color and its got the crazy bubbles and whittling as this pic shows... Man this beast is crazy, what will I pull out of the hole next?
