I went thru every patent for that date and really didn't see anything that I thought it could be, ecspecially since the patended date is on the glass globe, I wonder if it's even American with Patended spelled that way....

I would agree with Matt, a water trap of some type. Being glass you could monitor the water level and empty as needed.

The strange thing is the size of the piping. Quite large for such a small bulb.?

I'm not sure how you remove the glass globe Rocky....
