I have found that bottles in water like company so they will collect together in the lowest part of the river old and new together.
My best bottles have been probed in the mud on the bottom sometimes upto 18inches down.
Good luck

What area are digging?? I suspect SW NSW if so I may be able to steer you in the right direction as I do a fair bit of diving in the Darling and Murray river and find quite a bit of old stuff from 1860's on

Hi Jodie,
Sounds like you are an aussie collector??
Dont know much about the Marnes but the jonathon reeves I believe is from Ballarat made pickles sauce etc not sure of value. The lamont is from Silverton just west of Broken Hill NSW if it has an amber top it is rare otherwise...
Oh dear this would be the most entertaining thread I have seen on here.
I spose we should never attribute to mallice what can be better explained by stupidity
John
You got some nice bottles there, I dug there in the seventiesand would like to have another go but I hear that you have to pay a fee to get in and the gates are locked. How did you get in contact with them to get in?
Hi Probe,
You dont say where you are gong to dive but if you are going to dive in shallow water and have someone to stay topside to watch you compressor a hookah is a good way to go. I use both types but prefer to use my 12v system in the local rivers. It is quiet and easy to carry and CO is...
Eric,
the biggest scare I have had is having a big fish attacked my hand while I was diving in zero vis. We have a fish called Murray Cod here that grows to over 100lb and it is very territorial and I was feeling my way around a submerged log when it came out from its hiding place and hit me...
Hey dirt, great finds but looks a bit chilly for us Aussies
I have been a bit under the weather just getting back to the important stuff (getting bottles), I still find my best bottles diving but have been looking at a nice dump about 130 years old and feel the urge to pick up my shovel and...
Oh I dont mind zero viz diving but not keen on diving in poop. I have large fish hit me in the dark is kinds scary even though I know there is nothing down there that is going to hurt me.
I have tried using a light but it seems to reflect off all the particles in the water and all I get is a...
Hey Wayne,
They are nice blacks, they are a bit older than I find in my area, would love to get hold of one like that top one. It is amazing that the ones we find here are so good to look at but are worth next to nothing.
Brett, I use a hooker our main concern are snags as there is a lot...
When I look for bottles a lot of time is spent in the library or study doing research. Here is a copy of a map I found showing the new site I am looking at. There was a lot of buildings on these station properties in the 1800s- lot buildings=lot of people=lot of bottles.
Wayne,
In places I do but more often than not there is nothing on the banks. Believe it or not these rivers do run at the top of the bank at times and this tends to wash the bottles down.
The land above the high water mark is private property and it is hard to get permission.

Irish, the water is up to 5 metres deep in the water hole. The pubsite ison private property and I dont have permission to dig "still working on it". This is the spot I will find my Thistle Whisky[;)]. I found several broken goldfield pickles and oils. The sediment is up to 600mm deep so it will...
Found a new site yesterday, not a great day but found a few pontilled blacks. It took a long time to find the exact spot as there is no evidence on the bank. Will head back as soon as I can to do some serious diving as it appears to be pretty early.
