Hyposphosphites are used in plating. Maybe it was for polishing metal things? Just a thought. What's it smell like if you can get a whiff of it?

SYRUPUS HYPOPHOSPHITUM. Syrup of Hypophosphites.

Recipe.—Calcium Hypo phosphite, forty-five grammes 45 Gm.

Potassium Hypophosphite, fifteen grammes 15 Gm.

Sodium Hypophosphite, fifteen grammes 15 Gm.

Diluted Hypophosphorous Acid, two grammes 2 Gm.

Sugar, six hundred and fifty grammes 650 Gm.

Tincture of Fresh Lemon Peel, five cubic centi- meters 5 Cc. Water, o sufficient quantity,

To make one thousand cubic centimeters. . 1000 Cc.

COMPOUND SYRUP OF HYPOPHOSPHITES

QUININE, STRYCHNINE, IRON, LIME, POTASSA,AND MANGANESE. This is a combination of salts, allied to blood salts, and consequently true haematics, with the bloodbuilding iron, and the two powerful vegetable tonics, strychnine and quinine; the acid holding them in solution being the hypophosphorous acid. Thus it will be seen that it is a very complex fluid: but so is the blood. The aim of its composer is to supply, in a highly digestible form, a medicine at once restorative and tonic. It may be desirable to pursue further the action of the various constituents of the syrup.

The salts are very useful in cases of anaemia and blood-deterioration. "We know that the various saline matters are essential to health, that when they are not present in proper form, nutrition is affected"
