One of my students found this (pictured) Armour Beef extract jar. We read that Armour was the largest meat packing company in 1891. The jar we found was about 2.5 inches tall and was in perfect shape. Could it actually have been one of the jars used before 1900? Thanks, Jamie Kamlet

HiThat's a nice little jar. All of the jars like that I've seen were made by machine which usually means after 1900. There were some earlier machines but they were generally just for bottles.Illinois Glass Company showed something similar in their 1906 catalog. http://www.sha.org/bottle/Typing/IGCo1906/IGCo1906page224.jpgbut they were were probably used into the 1920's. At some point they may have changed over to a screw thread but I can't tell from the picture if that is or isn't threaded.

I have found these jars in late 1890s dumps so it may have been made in a press mold .
