that Indian Hammer might be a sharpening stone. It has a very similar shape and look as some of the ones I've dug. Would need to see it cleaned up a bit to tell for sure.

It might be hematite , hard to tell with the mud on it.

No Rick, he's not making that up. Hematite is one of the many types of rock they used to make stone tools out of. It has a metalic (cold) feeling to it and takes a high polish.

I'm almost Certain it's a Historical era sharpening stone. Once it's cleaned
Dave will be able to tell more about it.

HEY LEX I CLEANED UP THE STONE,IT HAS ALOT OF SPARKLES TO IT.VERY FLAT ON ONE SIDE LIKE IT WAS DEFINITELY USED AS A TOOL OF SOME SORT.WILL TRY AND PUT SOME PICTURES ON TOMORROW AFTER 2ND JOB. BADGER

hematite was a special stone for the aboriginal people. THey ground it to make the red paint for thier bodies.
They also made gorgets out of hematite in roughly the same shape as your item.
