You will know if you are near a yellow jacket nest long before you start digging near it. Here in California yellow jackets are generally fierce. One of the only stinging insects that also bites at the same time. I inadvertently crossed over a yellow jacket nest on Los Gatos creek one day out hunting bottles alone. They flew after me, chased me up a hill. Two of them stung and bit my left arm simultaneously. I whacked them off with my right hand and the heads were still stuck in my left arm where they'd bitten me. Which of course freaked me out. I'm not allergic but I will say I'd rather run into almost anything than a yellow jacket nest.
