Flea market bargains help?

Hello all,
I recently went to a flea market and picked up some items I thought some of you might enjoy seeing. But first I apologize if this is in the wrong forum. I picked up all of these for a buck a piece of less. I don't think any of it is really worth anything but maybe I'm wrong? The main thing I had a question about is the little medallion or whatever you'd like to call it. The front of it says State of Rhode Island Providence Plantations. When you turn it around on the back it reads The Independent Man Rhode Island Bicentennial Commission Providence R.I. In the center of the medallion it says r176 drop in any mailbox then it has a number below that 1601. I'm thinking maybe it's a badge of some sort? Any ideas? I couldn't find anything on google about it. The knife is dated 1917 and I believe it to be a WWI mess kit knife. The flag I thought was rather neat considering it has 48 stars. Age idea on that anyone? The little bit is a 1948 boyscouts of america handbook. My apologies for the camera phone photos.

DON'T KNOW MUCH BOUT WHAT YOU GOT THERE,BUT IT IS COOL! WHEN I USED TO HAVE MONEY I WOULD GO TO FLEA MARKETS IN SEARCH OF BOTTLE,BUT I WOULD OFTEN COME HOME WITH THINGS LIKE YOURS THAT WASN'T BOTTLES OR BOTTLE RELATED. JUST LOVE OLD STUFF. I LOVE THE 1917 KNIFE! THE 48 STAR FLAG WAS FROM 1912 TO 1959! LOTTA YEARS ! YOURS LOOKS CLOSER TO THE 50S MARK TO ME. DANG YOU COULD DATE IT IF IT WAS 47 STARS BACK. HEY ARE THOSE COMIC BOOKS I SEE ALSO?: MAN ONCE BOUGHT A LOT OF COMIC BOOKS IN THE 70S THAT WERE FROM 50S 60S,ALL TEN CENT COMICS,GOT EM FOR 5CENTS EACH! NO SUPERMAN OR SUCH,BUT WENT TO A COMIC BOOK SHOW,NEVER GOT INSIDE. TWO GUYS BOUGHT ALL FOR A BUCK EACH! THOUGHT I DID GREAT! STILL WONDER WHAT THE HECK I SOLD! FROM THE LOOKS ON THOSE GUYS FACES IT WAS SOMETHING GOOD! OH WELL![&:] SORRY NO HELP WITH PRICES ETC![&:] JAMIE
