I picked up this bottle in NY back in May. It is listed as being George Britenbaker from Honesdale in NE PA. From the shape of the bottle I would date it to the early 1850's. This guy is hard to find information on, so I was hoping one of our NE PA members might have seen or heard of it. Any information on rarity or has anyone ever seen one? Thanks. stonebottle

Here is a closeup of the stamp. It has a nice deep and very readable impression.

Thanks. It does have a really early primitive shape. There is a glass bottle that I believe is embossed F. Britenbaker from Honesdale. That is the son of the guy on this bottle, as far as I know.

Hello stonebottle,

Another great stone bottle for your collection! What a bold impression. I like it a lot.

George F. Britenbaker was born January 25, 1865 in Honesdale, PA. He died June 2, 1942 in Pacific Grove, CA at the age of 77y 4m 7d. His ashes were sent to Elmyra, NY, according to the records at Santa Cruz Memorial Park.

surfaceone: If you go back farther, the father of the guy you are talking about was a merchant in Honesdale. I think that would be the George Britenbaker who used this bottle. It also makes since because there is really no way this stoneware bottle could be from the 1880's, it would pretty much have to be 1860's or older. I found that info. on ancestry.com back when I had a trial membership. stonebottle

This guy is hard to find information on

Hey stonebottle,

That's for darn sure. This other George may have turned up. "BRITENBAKER, George: 15 December 1842 – 28 September 1880 (Co. C, 2nd PA Heavy Artillery)" From.

Outstanding. That is probably the guy that used this bottle. Now I will try to find out more about him. It would also be great to hear if anyone else has ever seen one of these bottles either in stoneware or glass. It is really cool that he was also a Civil War veteran. I think you should be a professional researcher. Thanks. stonebottle

It looks like that could be the guy or there may be another relative who was slightly older. I do remember that I saw a few George Britenbaker's listed in census records for Honesdale. I think they were all related to each other. I just sent pictures to the Wayne County, PA Historical Society in Honesdale to see if they have any information. I really like to try to find the history behind these bottles. It's not so that I can sell this one, because believe me it's not going anywhere! Except for right back on the shelf where it belongs. stonebottle

I would say it is scarce as I collect Pike County Pa and Wayne County Pa bottles and stoneware ( mostly crocks & jugs ) & I've never seen one . Thanks for all the information posted ! Would love to buy it if it is ever for sale or you get a duplicate !
