oarlock is not. It's a lightning rod insulator (LRI) holder. Most likely mounted on the side of a building and held the cable running from the roof to the ground. Although I have seen them installed along the ridge of the roof also. Your's would have been pounded into the mortar between brick or stone.

I have only seen the closed loop screw in models in the past. I was second guessing myself on that one but gave into the romance of the water, which was a hundred yards from the hole.

So what do yo make of this?

We try lol helps to be a history nut, thats my number two draw to diggin for old glass, the history of it..Guess it would have to depend on what was in the area way back then. I ruled out ice because it doesn't seem like it would open wide enough. If it was for small blocks of ice it would have a handle and not a chain link I would suppose. Deff looks like it was forged by hand, it is a very nice find. I wouldnt think that those are found every day in that good of condition

Railroad tie tongs, i suppose it could be used for a number of other things though....
