I've been meaning to post some photos of a bottle search and finds that me and my 12-year old son had last summer when we were on vacation in SC. Maybe this will help warm up all of you snowbound diggers.
First a little background. My granddad built a vacation cottage on a beautiful tidal river north of Beaufort, SC back in the early 1930's with his WWI bonus check. It's been in our family ever since and I try get back there every summer. My son, Alastair has caught the bottle bug after seeing my collection from the early 70's and has got me back into it too.
There's a plantation next door to our property that dates to Revolutionary War times. I tried to get access to the plantation lands to look for digging sites, but they were remodeling the main house, so they didn't want anyone on there. Maybe next year. So we went looking for some places to search along the river.
About a mile down the river from the plantation house, we went up to the shore and started walking through the marsh. As long as we stayed below the high tide line we wouldn't be trespassing. There weren't signs of old glass, but after awhile, my son picked up the lip of an old black glass bottle. After searching some more I found a part of the base. They were just lying there on the surface, perhaps having been there for over 200 years. We dug a bit but found no other pieces. It was still cool to find these pieces.
Here's a pic of the plantation house and shards.
