Around here we call those opium or snuff bottles...would have a stopper with a tiny spoon attached for dispensing...they were for personal use hence the fancy shape and textured glass. Some of the nice ones had real ivory spoons, cheaper ones used bone, also silver spoons, some bottles were very ornate and are worth lots of money now. Here is real nice one from Collectors weekly. My ol uncle Frank used snuff back in the 1970's...I remember the smell and the Skol containers in his house, still I can't imagine snorting that crap up your nose![]..and to think it was mostly used by upper class folks in the 1700's-1800's...even Women apparently used it as well [:'(]
