wonder if it is the most sought after British medicine. It has to be in the top three

I doubt it. I can think of at least a few much nicer and I dont even pay that much attention to British meds.

So far as I'm aware this is the most expensive Daffy's to date. The bidding pattern was interesting. Even with the private bidder thing, my reading is that there was probably only one bidder over £4k, and without him/her it would have failed to make the reserve by a large margin.

The final price on this is high, IMO. My example is much nicer and I've always rated it (or did until now) at much less than this one sold for. There are four confirmed good examples in two different sizes, all blown in different molds, with several others credibly rumoured to exist.

Steve, it's definitely up there, but there are a few others that probably rate about the same for historical interest but higher for eye appeal. Sibly's Solar Tincture, Sigmonds Lotion, and Lobb's Tincture, to name only a few. There are also two known types of Daffy's, one in a dumpy globular shape completely different from 'normal' Daffy's, that have a heraldic device embossed, and a rumoured third type. It's in the top ten though IMO, for sure.

Sibly's Solar Tincture, Sigmonds Lotion, and Lobb's Tincture
Great looking bottle the Silbys Solar tincture. Matt check this out.

Look at the medicinal claims on this one,it is Viagra on Steriods!! It can raise the dead let alone cartlidge.[:D] You take some of this Silbys for erectile dysfunction and you will have a woody that wont quit for a week or two.The description of the bottle and the medicinal claims below. This makes Dyott,Daffy,Swaims, all the early ones look like kindergarten teachers.

This tall, clear, straight sided glass bottle is inscribed 'By His Majesty Letters Patent Dr Sibley's Solar Tincture'. There is also a raised impression of a sun within a shield. Dr Sibly claimed that his tincture could restore someone to life after they had died suddenly by 'blows, fits, falls, suffocation, strangulation, drowning, apoplexy, thunder and lighting, assassination' and 'duelling'. Just not what O J simpson did to his wife It cant bring you back from a multiple stabbing wounds.President Lincoln should have been carrying his Silbys that fateful night at Fords theater.Might have helped Alexander Hamilton too!!

Years the medicine was produced 1751-1790

Great post, Steve,

First of these I've ever heard of, let alone seen. Thanks for that. Some mighty handsome pixels on that tincture. I love an English sunrise.

I want to fondle one of those, though that will probably be an unfulfilled bottle bucket lister, alas. [>:]

Confusing, I swear at £4500 I saw the reserve wasn't met. I also thought that over £3000 the increments were £100. Why the jump from £4000-4500? An accepted offer?

Someone bid 5,000 pounds and retracted it saying they bid the wrong amount, I have a feeling there may have been "shill bidding" to drive the price up.

Wouldn't mind digging one of these. I have thought for quite some time that it is a really cool looking bottle.
