OK, firstly, I know what it is, but listing in pontils only category seemed like the place for a post to croak. So, the story is, I dug this early Jayne's Alterative in a mostly pontil pit a while back and was surprised it was a smooth base. Then I read about the address changed in '58 so just figured it was an early smooth base. Then I discovered the building was the same but the numbers were updated from 84 to 242 Chestnut. Leaving me with the thought that maybe they weren't too concerned about updating the molds as that would have surely cost plenty of $. Besides, the building being the same location would not lose any mail delivery. So this was just a later style bottle with the earlier address? OR, could this be a sand pontil or sticky ball type pontil? As I look closer at it, it is different than any disc or post mold insert. I recently bought a pontiled example and this one is more crude and glass thinner with funky potstones. Any thoughts appreciated. Pics a commin'..........Thanks in advance. Jack

Also has a ring lip which I only have seen on the 242 addressed bottles. All the 84's have a tapered finish. Also, just noticed while taking pics the apostrophe is very squared off in Jayne's. Here is a close up of the apostrophe.

Thanks carp....that's what I think. I just reexamined the base indent and it is actually more than the open pontiled one. Also looks like it could even be an iron pontil without any residue left, but usually under a loop I can find SOME trace evidence. Not this one though. Very strange....
