Been at this broken in half house in the woods near the inlaws' farm. It's literally cut in half (well, falling down now). Logging truck hit it on the way through the narrow dirt path/road. I went there to metal detect. Guy who lives near there said a couple of guys started MD'ing there and found an engine and hauled it out with his help and they left. Figured they hadn't hit it all, since the property is 3-5acres.
I get there the first day and I start finding car parts everywhere. Single barrel carbs, double barrel carbs, narrow wheels with wooden spokes and 100's more. Model A frames stacked 4-6 high, a pit with nothing but the wood spoked tires/rims and misc car parts lying all over the place. My recent find is what looks similar to a '40s Buick transmission, this one is a bit more flat on the bottom..
ok..so tons of auto parts for the taking.
The house has been abandoned since 1926 when the "old man" died. he'd lived there most of his life. I found a few ravines that held '30s-'40s bottles on top from people who've hunted there. The property sits adjacent to a very thick stand of pines. Huge deer come out of there so it used to be hunted quite heavily.
One thing I did find interesting. A shallow pit/depression with more '30s-'40s items. Got to the bottom and the ground felt pretty soft. Peeled away the leaves and soil and 2' down hit a wooden liner. It's approx. 4'x8'. Had no digging tools, so dug by hand just to see what was down there. Another 2' down I hit what at first I thought was just swampy dirt. Actually was moist clay. No idea how far down the clay goes (I'm heading back up there wed 20th afternoon).
I've spent many hours metal detecting on the farm and property near it and have never dug through clay.
Would you guys/gals keep digging this spot? Will be either MD'ing the place while I pickup auto parts along the way, or digging that pit and picking up auto parts as I exit.
No pics of the spot as of now (pics of the house and some of the parts I've found though), but will get some this weekend. thanks for any input!
