Hi All,
I was wondering if someone could identify what these bottles are. There are 3 of them and they used to be painted along the shoulders and on the sides. It looks like they have pontil marks on the bottom and the neck seems to be "pushed onto" the bottle. They look old but I'm not sure how old.

Any info you could give me would be much appreciated!

Thank you.

Happy New Bottles, Margaret,

Welcome back. This is where we ask to see more photographs of the bases, the tops and the stoppers, please.

If you could photo the paint remnants, or comment on what it may have looked like, would also be helpful.

They appear to be colonial era, made in the German Half Post method. They look kinda Stiegelish to me, but this kinda glass is outside of my sphere of reference.

I'll send a PM to one of our members to whom it is quite within his ken...

Since Surf has called you Margaret I can be assured that is your name. The bottles you posted appear to be either Southern German,or Bohemian made. I am leaning towards Bohemian because of the collar at the half post area on the neck. The paint that is missing is probably gold in color? Did the paint if any is still visible that ran around the perimeter of the shoulder area almost look as though it is drapery? The floral sprays seen on the larger bottle is Germanic in look. All of these bottles were also part of a liquor chest that usually belonged to someone with a little social stature. As for a date about 1790. These were most popular in that time period particularly with the 24 carat gold/lead paint gilding. Most of the gold decor was Bohemian based where the German style was to use the copper wheel etching method. This is a chest I own with similar bottles in it. These are the German type that were also made here in the colonies

This Chest once was part of the famed Salem Witch trial home on Essex Street in Salem Massachusetts. It was owned by George Corwin you can see the initials G C 1746. This chest housed large bottles in the bottom and drinking glasses in the top.
