That is a beauty... and 240 yards is one hell of a shot! You must have a very nice set up!!

Mine was from roughly 80 yards out, but I was able to put it exactly where I wanted. I am using a Winchester Model 70 30/06 bolt action with a Leupold scope. It is dead on at 100 yards, but I have never taken a shot at anywhere near 240!

We spotted him from about half a mile. When he went back to feeding we walked up to the top of the ridge, out of sight, and hauled butt to the cliff above him. I had to belly crawl to the edge, roll up an extra shirt, and poke my '06s barrel over the edge. My rangefinder said 239 yds and the buck was down at a steep angle. He was facing away, so all I could see was his back. I put the crosshairs right at the spine, just below his neck, and touched 'er off. BOOM! The buck collapsed in his tracks. After gutting him and cutting off the lower legs we still had to hack him in half to carry him back up the steep hill. It was WAY after dark when we got back to camp and I had a couple hours work to clean him up. Of the nine bucks taken in our 14 hunter group, 6 had to be halved, or quartered, to pack out of the rugged canyon. Whatever happened to shootin' 'em and just loading 'em into the truck?

It's a Mule/Blacktail hybrid, woody. No Whitetails in CA, yet. It won't be long, though, they are in OR and movin' south.

Where I hunt I'm lucky if I can make a 100 yard shot. It's just too thick with trees and brush.

Woody, it's very open country. You can sit and glass these draws for hours. We saw at least 30 deer each day and lots more on most. Big bucks, but too deep in the canyon to sensibly stalk. The guard does keep a very close eye on things and snort the alarm at the slightest movement. Long shots are the norm, but being ethical is foremost. I would hate to wound an animal and ahave it escape to die miserably.
