I found this today at the antique mall. This stands about 9 3/4" and 3 1/2" Wide at the base. This is very dark olive amber, I have a hard time getting light to pass. This is very thick , Crude very nice finish, and what I believe to be a nice sand pontil. Is this fire polished? how old is this and is it worth the 20.00 I paid for it? Thanks Jay

Looks like a Black Glass Ale bottle, you didn't get hurt considering the condition, especially if you like it...

Thanks, yes ilike this one, first one I have found. So how old is this and is this english or American. I will try to take some pics in the sun tomarrow, but it seems to only show the olive amber in the middle, the rest seems to be to dark. Jay

I think they date around 1860s-1870s and I think they are european mostly. Yours has a tapered lip so might be American. I've seen a lot with a kind of rounded lip and neck ring. They don't seem to sell for more than 25 or so around here. I've passed on them for as little as 15 just because they're a common ale bottle. I have managed to dig a few whole ones in my days. Years ago I could pick them up for five bucks, but they are all priced around 25 now. Really a nice old bottle.

Herllo jskkrk; I think your bottle is a neat one. Is that part of a number in the bottom or possibly part of a makers mark? Is there a vent dot in the dead center of the bottom?
The bottle is fairly old, so I would be inclined to keep it until you find out more about them.
