From my collection of Mt Dew bottles, it seems that 1973 was the transition year for the classic "ya-hooo!" phrase. I say this because I have some 1973's with and without the phrase as part of the ACL label. That being said (and please correct me if I'm wrong), I'm wondering about the bottle paper/cardboard cartons/carriers, whatever the proper terminology. Like the early 1970's bottles, the Ya-hooo! phrase was also featured on the top handle of the cartons. But what I'd like help with is information as to how far into the 70's they persisted? For instance, might you find a 1975 bottle that does not have the Ya-hooo! ACL label, but was packaged into a carton with the Ya-hooo! phrase? Please, any insight into this issue would be much appreciated. Cheers

Member Morbious_Fod and a few other Mountain Dew collectors will likely be along to answer your question(s) in more detail. In the meantime, please check out this link showing the Mountain Dew timeline and that the use of "Ya-Hoo" was introduced in 1965 when the Pepsi Cola Company bought Mountain Dew and was used until 1973. As for the slogan being used beyond that date, or on other items, Morb and the others will be able to tell you more.

The latest use of "Ya-hooo" I have been able to find so far is on a 1974 paper label No Deposit - No Return bottle. (Which does not include the Hillbilly image).

According to the timeline that sodapopbob hipped me to, 1973 was indeed a special year for packaging and logos. Depending on your perspective of course. According to the published timeline, and I quote, "1973 - Pepsi completely alters Mountain Dew's packaging, abandoning the "hillbilly" look and changing the logo for the first time since the drink's creation to appeal to a "younger, outdoorsy generation." Ahhhh, progress. So my bottles don't lie. But I'm still in a jam with the bottle cartons. The reason being is that I've got close to 100 of the "Ya-hooo" cartons and don't want to fill them with post-1973 bottles if it's not an accurate representation of the period. I'll keep looking. Thanks

Thanks SPB. All my bottles are ACL and return for deposit. But it's a good lead. Thanks.

Also, mine are all 10 oz. By the time the 16 oz. bottles came out, which I also have, the Ya-ooo! was well gone. Unless, of course, someone can show me an ACL 16 oz bottle with the Ya-hooo! still there. That would be cool.

Just a quick post-note. Ya know, my gut instinct (for what it's worth) tells me that Pepsi had plenty more cartons in stock compared to bottles. So according to my logic, they may have had a stock of the Ya-hooo! cartons that well exceeded what was left of the Ya-hooo! bottles. I could be way of base, but if this holds, it could be that post-1973 10 oz. return for deposit bottles were finding there way into cartons with the Ya-hooo! phrase. All speculation, of course. Should have posted this earlier. Here's an example of the Ya-hooo! carton I've been talking about. This one is a bit worn, but still solid for holding bottles.
