I found this walking in the field near where some bottles sites. I can make out "Of The Road" but then there is some thing with the last two letters being SS I think. Any suggestions of how to safely clean or what it might say?

Good hello all, in the next few days i am going to be digging at a 40's 50's dump. Most of what i know about bottles has to do with bottles from the late 1800's. What should i be on the look out for in this dump? what types of bottles? Any advice or pics of stuff to look out for?

found these two L.H. Thomas Co. 846 inkwells or i think there inkwells, when i was walking a creek the other day. They are almost exactley the same but the bottom of one is pointed out and it wont sit flat. The bottem of the other is pointed in and it will sit flat.. Why is this?
I collect bottles mostly from rivers and i am trying to find a good way to get the black scum off them. I have tried sand but i hear that can scratch them and i don't want to use a tumbler... Any ideas?
