With a title like "Shades of the Depression" I think you need to hear some Weird al polkas Glassman!

Polkas on 45

"Hooked on Polkas"

"Power Polka"

And now the best Weird Al song of all time, and even includes footage of Glassman's favorte Republican, "Christmas at Ground Zero".

If those don't cheer you up about the economic situation, nothing will.

If all of those don't help then there is the feel good Monty Python classic, "Always look on the bright side of life". Warning there is one cuss word in it.

I'm sure you are thinking that I am making light of a terrible situation, and you are correct; however, there is absolutely nothing I can do about the situation, so I don't worry about it. As my mother is so fond of always saying, "It'll all come out in the wash." It blows up in our face, it blows up in our face, what's the worst that can happen death?

Vote them all out!!!!!

Some idiot is giving the NPP to another idiot with no experience trying to run a country full of folks who mostly wouldn't know they were having an experience if they were on fire but because everyone wants to have an experience the world thinks we should have that experience because if we do have an experience maybe just maybe we will send them a check but we have had an idiot already win the NPP for a slide show about nothing except a few erroneous assumptions that he wasn't even sure about so nothing will probably happen anyway.

Yeah man, I'd like to have one of those NPPs for myself. I could hang it is the can and stare at it while I do my biniss!!!

Vote them all out and threaten to do the same to the next bunch before they even start. Keep a close watch on them and teach our children and grand children to do the same.

I honestly think this could have waited a couple of years

I believe part of the reason they did it so early was that they also intended it to be a slap in the face of the Bush admin. I think they wanted to make that point while it was still relevant. It should not be underestimated how much bush and his neocons were hated in Europe. The award in some ways was a nod to the US people for finally coming to thier senses. The fact that Americans were so surprised shows they didnt really understand the feelings of the Europeans.

I wont try to judge whether he should have got it or not, but there are a lot of bad things going on in the world. I would say that any time an American president wins the NPP that is a good thing.

I say change the Tax code and Tax people and corporations on what they spend not what they earn. Give people an incentive to work hard and save money again. No more of the bull crap telling people to go spend money because it's good for the economy.

I agree 100%, Chris. Our founding fathers had it right- Consumption-based (excise) taxes and import tariffs were the only federal taxes that existed for a long time. If you chose to save or invest your money, you were not stung with taxes before you ever got a chance to do so.

The archaic and socialistic tax code of today needs to be completely scrapped. "Reform", while a noble idea, is not possible in a system that is riddled with loopholes that are exploited for political gain, punishes success, deters saving, rewards greed, encourages corruption and evasion, and, in conjunction with its friend fiat currency, enables big government to grow perpetually.

A century ago, we were the strongest, most productive nation on earth, and a net creditor nation. Now look where we are. The federal income tax and the Federal Reserve have made this possible. Not many of the bad policies and economically-destructive deeds of the government would have been possible without them. ~Jim

Sad but true, Lobey. Along with everything you listed, add in Government Motors, AIG, TARP, the unstimulating stimulus, and what is really the point of taxing poor slobs like us? Hundreds of billions in deficits under W were bad enough, but now, we're into trillions for as far down the road as anyone can see.

They could take every cent earned by guys like you and me, and then do the same to our next three generations of family, and there would still be massive deficits. Why not just let us keep our few insignificant little greenbacks so we can buy important things like pontiled bottles, pizza and beer [:D] Just jack up the deficit another trillion or two and leave us alone, what's the point in stopping now, right?? ~Jim

Gunth, I respect you a great deal, but to say that americans finally came to their senses? How so? Because we elected OBama? Tell me exactly why this man was the best canidate for the office?

At the risk of sounding like a racisist (which I am not) This man was elected because of two reasons, One he wasnt a republican. 2nd because he was a man of color. You ask most of the people who voted for him "what is his stance on certian political policies" and they couldnt tell you. What experiance does he have that would make him a good president?

I think the reason most people are stunned that he won the award is simple. He didnt EARN it! Dont you think it minimizes the award to the people who have worked hard to earn this award? A slap in Bush's face? I think you must be the only one in the country that has that take on it. Look, I am no fan of Bush. He was a huge part of why we are in the mess we are in. But so was Clinton. Bush's NAFTA policy and Clinton basically deregulating the real estate industry. Allowing loans to be bundled and sold off. thus allowing loan and mortgage compamies giving bad loans then selling them off to the next guy. While skimming prodessing fees over and over. It was a big joke inside the industry. NAFTA allowed jobs to leave this country in droves.

Chris, Your idea certianally isnt new, as a previous poster commented on. The thing is, it makes to much sense. The only problem I see with it is that the "black market" would explode.

To answer Lobe, I am a buisness owner, I run a buisness out of my home. I have one employee, myself. I also hold down a full time job. I had to cancel my insurance because the company I work for only offers me one plan. $160 a WEEK!
I no longer can afford it. No one has giving me anything. I have worked for and earned everything I own. I am uneducated and came from nothing. Now I make a decent living and never live above my means. Why should I be penalized for wanting to keep what I have worked for?
